"And in the end, of course, a true war story is never about war. It's about sunlight. It's about the special way that dawn spreads out on a river when you know you must cross the river and march into the mountains and do things you are afraid to do. It's about love and memory. It's about sorrow. It's about sisters who never write back and people who never listen." - Tim O'Brien, The Things They Carried |
1957, Miyoshi Umeki
Best Supporting Actress Miyoshi Umeki won for her role in “Sayonara” as Japanese war bride Katsumi. She was the first (and so far only) Asian Actress to win an Academy Award. Like Eva Marie Saint and Mercedes McCambridge, it was her sole nomination and win in her debut film. Afterwards she went on to star on Broadway in “Flower Drum Song,” where she was nominated for a Tony. When it was adapted for film, she also starred in it and was nominated for a Golden Globe award. She went on to appear in only three more films before retiring from acting in 1972.
On the one hand, that’s fantastic, great for her.
On the other hand- bolded. Seriously? Fucking seriously?
I agree so much. It’s shameful.
